Tom Swart started his PhD in the lab at the beginning of 2019. He received is BSc Biology at Imperial College where he focused on the function of sleep. Afterwards, he received his MSc Neuroscience at King’s College London, specialising in Cognitive Neuroscience. For his MSc thesis he investigated the effect of attention and reward processing in alexithymia. On his current project, Tom is investigating the mechanisms driving a multisensory phenomenon called autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR). ASMR is characterised by pleasant, calming tingling sensations felt in the head or on the scalp in response to specific (social) visual and/or audio cues. Using neuroimaging techniques and measuring associated physiological changes Tom hopes to help uncover what changes occur in the brain whilst experiencing ASMR.
